Pearl of Wisdom: Take a nap when you can, the laundry can wait. And I do not just mean for pregnant or new Moms, I mean all of us!
After a very long, long academic career I became a Certified Nurse Midwife in 1996, I have worked at Fairview Riverside Women’s Clinic since that time. While in school and awaiting more school I have worked at Hennepin County Medical Center and University of Michigan Medical Center as a Labor and Delivery nurse. One interesting fact about me is that I was an employee at Fairview Ridges when it opened, I worked in the kitchens delivering trays to patients, the salad cook and dishwasher. I still have the silver coin to prove it.
Being a midwife really feels like two jobs in one. I love meeting and talking to women in the clinic. I especially enjoy seeing women year after year and hearing about their lives, from dating to marriage, through kids, as the family grows and we all get older. The younger women I love teaching and always hope I say a little something that empowers them to achieve great things. The second job is ‘catching babies’. I am always so honored and feel very blessed to be present at such an intense and life changing time for women.
I am very interested in complementary medicines. I have created several herbal handouts for various issues affecting women. In fact, in graduate school my herbal project that I gave to my fellow classmates ended up being longer than my Master’s thesis. I tend to be more interested in herbals, homeopathics, aromatherapy and energy work. I am certified in level 2 Reiki however I do not practice and would like to learn more. I believe we can learn a lot from complementary practitioners and need to work in conjunction with them more often.
Personal life: I am a very proud Single Mother by Choice of a beautiful daughter. We do all the normal fun kids activities but our best holiday is MayDay Parade and Pageant at Powderhorn Park in Minneapolis the 1st weekend in May. My other interests include making herbal tinctures and aromatherapy oils. For a stress reliever I do enjoy coloring mandalas.
